On 31 October, the Australian Productivity Commission released its Mental Health Draft Report – it estimates the cost to our economy of mental ill-health & suicide is $43 – $51 billion per year, plus $130 billion for diminished health & reduced life expectancy.
Further:
- Nearly 50% of Australian adults will meet the criteria for mental illness at some point in their lives
- 1 in 5 Australians will meet this criteria every year
- Suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44, with approximately 65,300 suicide attempts each year
