Despite the standard sensational stuff in this piece, like rifts and sackings, it is a great read about an amazing personal and professional leadership journey.

I like hearing how close some ‘successful’ people came to giving it all away before outcomes turned around – the value of grit and perseverance. What is also clear is the value of continuous learning, of ‘trying new approaches’ but always grounded in an unwavering commitment to Purpose and Values.

I particularly like the leadership lessons.  Two which stand out are the value of hard work and also the importance of behaviours – defining and measuring the ones that are correlated to success – what we call performance signatures.

This is what we stress to all our clients – that you must focus on the leading indicators of success, not on lag indicators or outcomes; you must define those behaviours which increase your chances of being successful and stop fixating on outcomes.   After all these years, however, we still find that organisations over-invest in defining strategy and goals and under-invest in getting alignment to purpose and behaviours – at the end of the day, this will define your culture.

Underpinning all this is a climate of psychological safety and the way Cleary has established this is an example to all of us.

Well done to Ivan Cleary and the Panthers – a world class example of grit, hard work, leadership and culture – a High Performance Organisation that deserves to be celebrated.
